Guest Information

First Parish in Hingham, also known as Old Ship Church, first gathered in 1635. It became Unitarian in the early 19th century and in 1961, the Unitarian and Universalist movements merged. We are a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which is headquartered in Boston, and the Ballou Channing District, which is comprised of UU churches in Southeast Massachusetts and in Rhode Island.

Old Ship is a liberal religious community of approximately 250 members with a vibrant Religious Education Program for children through adults. Our community encourages personal spiritual growth through worship, discussion, mutual support, and friendship. We are different from many denominations in that we honor a diversity of ideas about religion and what is holy. We look to the church for stimulation and support as we seek to grow in accord with our own beliefs, needs, and understandings.

We are very pleased to welcome you to First Parish in Hingham, and hope you will feel comfortable among us. Old Ship welcomes and affirms persons of diverse backgrounds and interests, regardless of race, class, ethnic background, sexual orientation, or political belief. Please join us for Sunday worship, coffee in the Fellowship Hall following the service, and any activity or group which interests you. Sunday worship services are held each Sunday at 10:25 from September through mid-June. Childcare and the Children's Religious Education program both are offered in the Parish House across the street during regular worship services.

Following the service, please join us for coffee and conversation in the Fellowship Hall that is diagonally across the street from the Meeting House. Our Members and Friends Committee has a table in the Fellowship Hall at which you might register as a guest, find out more about Religious Education offerings, and receive information about Unitarianism in general and Old Ship, in particular. If you think that you might desire to become a member at some point, we have a folder with more information about membership.

In our effort to further the congregation's purposes, we offer a wide range of groups, events, and committees. We hope that several of them will appeal to you. You will find the available groups, events and committees listed on the website.
